New
Leadership/Funding for WREN
The Water Resources Education Network project welcomes new Project Manager,
Sherene Hess, and new funding from the PA Department of Environmental
Protection for two local grants programs as well as our support programs
for local projects.
Sherene lives in Indiana County and for the past five years she has
been the Executive Director of the Indiana County Solid Waste Authority
where she was instrumental in establishing a greatly expanded recycling
facility and program. Sherene also serves on the local board of the
Indiana County League of Women Voters.
Sherene's educational background is in water resources and she is committed
to the WREN concept, that through education projects and team building
communities can increase their capacity to deal with the pressing issues
of drinking water and watershed protection.
WREN is also pleased to be able to offer two new local grants programs.
Thanks to funding from the PA Department of Environmental Protection,
pass through grants will be available for educational projects dealing
with protecting public drinking water sources and for projects dealing
with Watershed Education for Pollution Prevention. Grant proposals are
due on May 10, 1999. To get an RFP contact the League office at 1-800-691-7281.
WREN has also published a Special Edition of Water Policy News on DEP's
new Source Water Assessment Program. Copies will be mailed to the WPN
mailing list. Or, call the WREN Resource Center, 1-800-692-7281, to
request a copy.
A
Movie to See... A Book to Read
A Civil Action, the movie recently release starring John Travolta, is
getting a lot of press as a legal thriller, but we're interested in
it because its a groundwater story. The movie is based on the true story,
as told in the book of the same title, of drinking water contamination
in Woburn, Massachusetts and the long, frustrating attempt to connect
an
unusual number of children's leukemia cases to the contamination and
the corporations responsible for it. With an excellent cast and good
pacing, the movie will tell the groundwater story to a much larger audience
than we have reached so far.
