Project Title: Riparian Buffer Educational Demonstration 2009
River, stream, watershed affected by this project: Town Creek/Potomac River/Chesapeake Bay Watersheds
Partners: Southampton and Mann Townships, Everett Area School District, Bedford County Planning Commission; PA DCNR Bureau of Forestry, University of Maryland Appalachian Lab, Western Maryland RC&D, Bedford County Conservation District, Interstate Commission for the Potomac River Basin, The Nature Conservancy and Western PA Conservancy
Focus: coordinate planting work crews and conduct a hands-on workshop to emphasize the benefits of forested buffers for the Sideling Hile, Fifteen Mile, and Town Creeks, followed by a guided planting by the workshop attendees; a website willl publicize the project and further educate visitors to the site and the region about steps they can take to minimize nonpoint source pollution of these watersheds.

Area to be protected: Raystown Branch of the Juniata River

Focus: implement parts of their Source Water Protection Plan through installation of 6 Water Supply Area signs and distribution of Source Water Protection brochures to residents of the Raystown Branch Juniata River Watershed.

Project Title: Watershed Outreach in Bedford County
Area to be protected: Raystown Branch of the Juniata River
Partners: Broad Top Township and Everett Borough
Focus: use newsletters, resources from the Master Well Owner Network, watershed and groundwater models, and table top displays to illustrate to citizens of the Six Mile Run and Bloody Run watersheds the negative impacts of nonpoint source pollution such as abandoned mine drainage and failing septic systems. Through a watershed festival and storm drain stenciling, the partnership will educate property owners about actions they can take to protect their water resources.
