Columbia County Projects

                                                                                     

Roaring Creek Valley Conservation Assoc. (RCVCA), Grant Amount: $3,560     

 

Funded by: LWVPA-CEF WREN Project, Watershed Protection Project 2010-2011

Project Title: Community Rain Garden Model

Area to be protected: Roaring Creek

Partners:  Franklin Township, Columbia County Conservation District, Southern Columbia Area School District.

Focus: The Roaring Creek Valley Conservation Association, along with partners and SCASD students will design and construct a functional, educational stormwater Best Management Practice demonstration project on local school grounds in the form of a rain garden. The goal is to control and treat run-off on school property and improve water quality in our watershed, while providing an educational model for the community.  A community day where the public can learn about the project is planned, as well as permanent signage for future self-guided tour opportunities, which will include information on the project and how rain gardens protect water resources.

Friends of the Nescopeck, Luzerne, Schuylkill, Columbia Co, $4,312

Project Title:  Introducing the Nescopeck Creek Watershed:  It's Where You Live

River, stream, watershed affected by this project:  Nescopeck Creek Watershed

Partners: Conyngham Borough, Conyngham Borough Planning Commission, Nescopeck State Park and Eastern PA Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation (EPCAMR)

Focus:  design and distribute an eight page black & white newspaper insert alerting residents of Nescopeck Creek Watershed the effects of their activities on the health of the watershed and what they can do to minimize negative impacts; the insert will also encourage residents to support efforts to minimize abandoned mine drainage, manage stormwater properly, and respond appropriately to development pressures.

Project Title: Nescopeck/Little Nescopeck Watershed Awareness Project
Area(s) to be protected: Nescopeck Creek Watershed
Partner(s): Conyngham Borough, Conyngham Borough Planning Commission, and Hazleton Campus of Penn State University
Focus: create a multi-media education module about nonpoint source pollution prevention in the watershed and present to municipal officials, citizen and landowner groups, schools, and businesses in the watershed
