Crawford County

Crawford (NW): Crawford County Conservation District, Grant Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Rain Garden Demonstration Project NOTE: Project Canceled by Grantee
Funded by: LWVPA-CEF WREN Project, Watershed Education to prevent Nonpoint Source (NPS) pollution 2012-2013

Focus: Project partners will construct a demonstration rain garden as part of a streetscape project at a highly visible location in eastern Crawford County, along with an interpretive sign. The rain garden will be used as the focal point of a "Conservation Landscaping/Stormwater Management" workshop to be conducted by the conservation district. An evaluation tool will be developed to measure increased knowledge among workshop attendees about stormwater management.

Project Title: Crawford County Rain Barrel Rebate Program

Focus: This stormwater education project creates a Rain Barrel rebate program of $30 for up to 100 eligible participants who attend one of the four district hosted Rain Barrel workshops.  The project will re-use existing education tools including PowerPoint and print materials.

Project Title: Education and Outreach on Stormwater Management
Area to be protected: French Creek, Shenango River, Oil Creek

Partners: Crawford County Planning Commission, PA Environmental Council, Meadville Area Water Authority
Focus: The partnership will use a social marketing approach to develop stormwater public service announcements to combat common misperceptions about stormwater management. The project will conduct a stormwater workshop and bus tour for municipal officials and engineers in Crawford County featuring recognized expert speakers. In addition to encouraging adoption of innovative stormwater practices among Crawford County municipal officials, the project will also conduct training for public works staff to encourage stormwater awareness and leadership through improved municipal practices. Warren County Conservation District, Crawford, Erie & Warren counties, $5000

Project Title: Conservation Education News Spots
Area to be protected: Lake Erie and Ohio River watersheds

Partners: Crawford County Conservation District and Erie County Conservation District

Focus: prepare and air the "Green Tip of the Week" television commercial campaign to educate citizens in Warren, Crawford, and Erie counties about the steps they can take to protect and improve the watersheds they live in thereby protecting the sources of their drinking water.

French Creek Project (PA Environmental Council), Erie, Crawford, Mercer & Venango counties; $ 4,871

Funded by: LWVPA-CEF WREN Project, Watershed Protection Project 2005-2006
Project Title: Meadville Stormwater Best Management Practices Educational Project
Area(s) to be protected: French Creek Watershed
Partner: City of Meadville
Focus:  hold a “Better Stormwater Management Through Site Design” Workshop based on PA Dept of Environmental Protection’s Stormwater Manual. The workshop, aimed especially at municipal officials, will use a Stormwater BMP demonstration site developed by the partnership. Armed with resources to adequately review and critique proposed land development projects within the watershed, nonpoint source pollution from stormwater within the French Creek watershed can be reduced.  Workshop Agenda.

Meadville Area Water Authority, Crawford County, $4,215

Project Title: Meadville Area Partners Promoting Drinking Water Source Protection
Area(s) to be protected: French Creek Watershed
Partner(s): City of Meadville, American Water Services, Inc, French Creek project, Allegheny College, Vernon Township Water Authority, West Mead Township and Watts & Pepicelli
Focus: develop a coloring book about good source water protection practices in the home, develop an on-site tour of the water treatment plant, including the use of educational models, produce a brochure identifying the source water protection area and provide educational materials to the public library and schools about SWP. Produce a bookmark featuring a poster contest winner.

City of Titusville, Crawford County, $4,094

Project Title: Titusville's Wellhead Protection through Signage and Announcement Program
Area to be protected: Oil Creek watershed
Partners:  Oil Creek Township, Hyde Town Borough, Wellhead Protection Committee, City of Titusville Water Authority, Cherrytree Fire Department and Pleasantville Borough Fire Department

Focus: post "Water Supply Area" signs in the Oil Creek watershed where state roadways intersect the delineated water supply area and announce sign installations to citizens of the area via a bill stuffer.

Focus: develop educational materials and provide educational programs to the community to raise awareness of the need to protect the community's source water of their drinking water supply

Drinking Water Discovery Day
Funded by LWVPA-CEF WREN Project
- Drinking Water Source Protection Project 1999

Focus: This project partnered senior citizens and high school students in two Drinking Water Discovery Days which toured a water treatment facility and conducted various water education activities and discussion of drinking water issues within the French Creek watershed. A website devoted to organizing a drinking water education day was developed and a drinking water fact sheet published.
